Eccentric Billionaire Howard Hughes\' Mysterious \'36 Lincoln Convertible Found

This rare "Estate sale" find was transformed from a luxury car into a cross between an automobile and an airplane.

A genuine piece of automotive and movie history, Howard Hughes' 1936 V-12 Lincoln Model K Convertible, was converted by Hughes Aircraft into a camera car, and is now up for bid at OnlineAuction.com.

Eccentric Billionaire Hughes was a maverick and among the first to challenge the aviation industry and the supremacy of studio moguls and their strict moral codes with fast airplanes and explicit movies.

Starting life as a 4-door open car and re-fabricated into an aluminum boat tail roadster, Hughes' 1936 Lincoln Camera Car was featured in a major automotive magazine shortly after Ed Pickett, owner of Horseless Carriage Garage purchased the car in California many years ago. In an interview with James Farrell, Pickett's estate attorney and an old car enthusiast himself, Pickett claimed to have found a wad of papers for an experimental airplane Hughes was working on stuffed in the boat tail. Pickett recently died and the car was liquidated in an estate auction along with about a hundred other cars in Pickett's collection.

Hughes was well known for his creative genius and chose to convert this luxury car into a camera car and is believed to be the first of three or four automobiles converted in this fashion by Hughes. Hughes had one of his aircraft factories chop the windshield header and the tops of the doors and cap them with aluminum. He also removed the rear part of the car and had a new aluminum boat tailed section installed that covered the entire rear of the car, which was used by Hughes to carry expensive camera and film equipment to and from locations. The highly polished aluminum tail was designed to keep the film and equipment safe from the elements and exposure.

This historic vehicle is currently up for bid on OnlineAuction.com. The starting bid was only $100.00. At the time of this release it already had several bids. Check it out at OnlineAuction.com
