DAVIE, FL, November 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to the CDC over 30% of Americans are obese. From 2007 to 2009 the CDC states that the number of obese adults increased by 2.4 million. With such a drastic increase, obese patients have turned to bariatric surgery as a resolution. Bariatric procedures can decrease body fat by 25- 61% depending on which procedure you have chosen. While achieving your weight loss goal is rewarding, the loose, hanging skin is not. The likelihood of your skin tightening and returning to the pre-obesity state is unlikely. Leaving folds of skin can cause rashes, skin infections and difficulty fitting into clothing. Therefore, patients turn to plastic surgeons for Body Lift procedures. A body lift is the term used for procedures that lift and contour your body after weight loss due to surgery, dietary changes, age or pregnancy. A body lift also helps to remove residual excess fatty tissue and cellulite.
Types of Body lifts
- Upper Body Lift - focuses on mid-back, chest, and contouring of the breasts (Gynecomastia procedure if male)
- Lower Body Lift - focuses on abdomen, hips, buttock, outer thighs
- Total Body Lift - both upper and lower body lift performed together
There are no defining procedures that make up a body lift. Each individual body lift is customized and will require a distinct combination of procedures to restore your unique body shape.
Body Lift Surgery
Body lifts are performed in a hospital or a fully accredited surgical facility. General anesthesia is most commonly selected and the surgical time ranges from 4-8 hours, depending on the procedures you and your plastic surgeon have agreed upon.
Incisions are made in the targeted areas of the body. The Lower Body lift incision extends horizontally above the buttock, stretching from hip to hip. If the abdomen is to be tightened as well, then the incision will continue around to the front of the pelvis. For the upper body lift, the mid-back incision is made horizontally where the bra strap crosses. Both typically require liposuction for extra contouring. Stitches or staples may be used for closure. Drainage tubes are inserted to prevent excess blood and fluid buildup. Drainage tubes will remain until fluid measurements are minimal. Removal averages 10 to 14 days after surgery. Incisions are bandaged and changed after the first 48hrs. Compression garments are worn continuously for several weeks following surgery.
Body Lift Recovery
Allow 2 to 4 weeks for recovery and 6 to 8 weeks before strenuous activity, assuming your healing is progressive. This is a major surgical procedure and may require additional time for healing. Energy levels are not to be pushed. Follow your plastic surgeon's instructions and be patient. Listen to your body. If the activity causes dizziness, pain, or fatigue, then simply slow down and make sure to inform your plastic surgeon of any unexpected changes.
During your consultation your plastic surgeon will determine if you are a good candidate for Body lift procedures. This is based upon your overall health, family history and if you have realistic expectations/goals.
Ideas after recovery
After the upper and lower body lifts are performed and you have completely healed, arm lift, inner thighs lift, face and neck lift may be desired. Contouring of the remaining areas will provide a well-proportioned final outcome.
