According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2010 saw 32,885 fatal auto accidents in the United States. This is a 2.9 percent decline from 2009, and the lowest number of annual car accident fatalities since 1949.

2010 saw a total of 5,419,000 auto accidents, a 1.6 percent decline from 2009. However, 1,542,000 of those resulted in serious personal injury, an increase of 1.6 percent from 2009.

The five states with the fewest auto accident fatalities in 2010 were:
- Washington DC - 24
- Alaska - 56
- Rhode Island - 66
- Vermont - 71
- Delaware - 101

The five states with the largest number of auto accident fatalities in 2010 were:
- Texas - 2,998
- California - 2,715
- Florida - 2,445
- Pennsylvania - 1,324
- North Carolina - 1,319

In addition, Georgia, New York, Ohio, and Tennessee all had more than 1,000 fatal accidents in 2010.
