J. Martinez & Co. Fine Coffees Discusses the Lifespan of a Coffee Plant

NORCROSS, GA, December 11, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- J. Martinez & Company fine coffees would like to go back to the roots of their fine products by discussing the lifespan of a coffee plant.

If we peer far back enough into the origins of the coffee plant, we will find that they are indigenous to the Great Rift Valley in eastern Africa. It is in this very same valley where the remains of some of our most ancient ancestors were found, though they likely did not take advantage of the proximity. Like us, the plants have evolved quite a bit into the nicely domesticated coffee bean machines they are today, and have a life cycle that, interestingly, is a bit like ours.

Let's begin with the seeds (or, as most of us call them, the beans). Coffee seeds develop from a charming little fruit called the coffee cherry. It takes a good, healthy young plant about two years to start producing cherries, and another three years for their seeds to produce coffee that is good to drink. Cherries form after the flowering season, when the plants are covered in delicate, jasmine-like flowers. The time the first flowers bloom to the time that the coffee farmers harvest their seeds takes about nine months (just how long we take to develop).

Young plants need lots of care. They need to be fertilized, weeded, pruned, and vigilantly protected for the first five years. At five, they become a bit hardier, but still require lots of love. Though they can live as long as 100 years, the years in which they are at their peak in producing those beans that we crave are between 7 and 20.

"Providing the best coffee is our business, so we make it our business to know absolutely every detail about the plants, even the parts we are not there for," explains John Martinez, owner of J. Martinez & Company. "We encourage our drinker to sip knowledgably, as it can enhance your coffee experience."

When it comes to coffee, J. Martinez & Company are the experts on a lot more than the life cycle of the plant. They have got the perfect delivery system; your beans will only be roasted just before you order, for freshness that allows you to taste estate coffee like it is meant to be tasted.
