EDISON, NJ, January 17, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Split and torn earlobes are some of the most common aesthetic ear defects.
"Patients visit our office for consultations regarding having earlobe repair more often than one might think," said Dr. Andrew Miller, a plastic surgeon in New Jersey whose specialty is the facelift.
Reasons for earlobe repair include:
- Tears - These are usually the result of earrings being tugged on by children, a sports participation or clothing.
- Trauma - An earlobe injury that warrants repair can occur at any time.
- Fashion - Trendy and fashionable teenagers are purposely stretching out their earlobes by wearing plugs or discs to achieve an altered appearance. Once stretched, the lobes don't return to their original size.
- Piercing - Even though a piercing hole may close over time, an indention in the skin will always remain at the site. This can be troubling for people whose holes were uneven, which would have made wearing earrings awkward due to obvious asymmetry.
Many patients with disfigured earlobes still have the desire to wear earrings and/or restore symmetry, said Miller, whose colleagues also offer Brazilian butt lift surgery. Fortunately, there is a safe option available for restoring earlobes to their original state.
The earlobe can be repaired under general anesthesia in as little as half an hour. The condition of the earlobe will determine the type and degree of repair that is required. To repair a split earlobe, the surgeon will excise the skin around the split and suture together the fresh layers of skin. Dissolvable stitches eliminate suture marks on the ear and can be used in most cases.
Stretched earlobes require the surgeon to cut the lower part of the lobe and then suture it back together. If the patient desires to have their ear(s) re-pierced, the new hole will be placed in a slightly different location to avoid it disturbing the repaired skin.
It's recommended to those interested in earlobe repair that they meet with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss their options.
