Alternative Dentistry - There is a Different Way

The dangers of mercury toxicity in dental amalgam fillings are well publicized, and many people choose to have them replaced with less controversial materials.

MIAMI BEACH, FL, February 26, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicity states that "the Academy and its members have chronicled and promoted the research that has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that dental amalgam is a source of significant mercury exposure, and a hazard to health."

The Academy lists multiple examples of well-documented research for support, such as the "Sheep and Monkey Studies," showing "mercury distribution to the fetus of pregnant animals, and a variety of physiological lesions." after using amalgam fillings.

However in spite of these findings and staggering evidence, many dentists following traditional dentistry still simply remove the fillings, subjecting the patient to the now released vapors as well as small particles of amalgam. Amalgam fillings consist of 50 % Mercury, which is considered a neurotoxin linked to heart disease, Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, Kidney disease and a variety of Nervous system disorders.

According to South Florida dentist Dr. Hank Barreto, safely removing the amalgam requires a special protocol and consideration. After much research Dr. Baretto designed a special system to minimize contact and protect the patient. He explains that the borers you use, how you cut the material to prevent fumes from being released along with building a protective barrier all work together for safe removal.

"One of my patients was referred to me by her doctor after suffering a miscarriage due to mercury poisoning. Her levels were 160 while less than 4 is considered normal. She had her amalgam fillings removed by her previous dentist the traditional way and actually remembered swallowing some of the drilled out particles. Hearing these stories confirms that what we are doing here matters and makes a difference."

Dr. Barreto was originally inspired by his patient's concerns and subsequently followed research from the Holistic Dental Association and The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicity.

"Over the years of listening to patients you discover that there's more to it than what we have been taught in old school dentistry. Seeing actual results takes you even further and confirms that making those changes can have a profound impact."

According to Barreto safe dentistry is not limited to amalgam fillings. He feels many materials can affect the nervous system yet might not be visible to the naked eye.

"We think mercury is the main culprit, but you can have other metals that can interact with each other. Most people don't know that crowns that don't look like they are metal are in fact made of metal underneath. Also, many times patients will tell me they had their amalgam fillings removed, but when I take an x-ray I find fragments underneath. "

While Dr. Barreto firmly believes in using a holistic approach to treat his patients, he realizes that traditional mainstream dentistry does not share his views. The American dental Association is still treading carefully, leaning on their official 2009 statement that "Dental amalgam is considered a safe, affordable and durable material that has been used to restore the teeth of more than 100 million Americans. " However more and more reports including a UN Treaty to phase down amalgam point into a different direction.

"Let's just say that I am completely wrong about my theories and metals and traditional amalgam removal are completely safe--The worst-case scenario is that you leave here with beautiful smile and piece of mind. "
