MONTREAL, CANADA, March 26, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Paul Skolnik, Attorney at Law, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in international, criminal and human rights law.
Mr. Skolnik is a gifted, bilingual (English/French) defense attorney who is celebrating his 36th year in the industry. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Business Administration from Loyola College Montreal, now Concordia University, in 1972 followed by a Bachelor's Degree in Law (B.C.L.) from McGill University in Montreal in 1975. Six short years later, Mr. Skolnik won a major case before the Supreme Court of Canada (see Korponey v. A.G. Canada 1982 1 S.C.R.41.), an achievement he still considers the highlight of his career.
In addition to his role in the courtroom defending criminal cases and litigating mega-trials and those involving narcotics and international criminal law, Mr. Skolnik has been working on the Baladeur Case, which involves organized crime murder and attempted murder, since March 2012. He previously served as a lecturer for the Quebec Bar Association's Advocacy Seminars from 1990-1995, and to this day, he still enjoys mentoring younger lawyers. He attributes his success to a hard work ethic, passion for the law and respect for the client. He also never underestimates the opposing counsel or the difficulty of a problem, and always maintains a sense of humor.
Mr. Skolnik's list of legal achievements is impressive. For instance, he received the Robert Sacchitelle Award from the Montreal Criminal Defense Lawyers Association in recognition of his acquittal of Brigadier General Kabiligi. The general had been charged with conspiracy, genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes but was acquitted of all ten charges in the indictment. Mr. Skolnik also represented two clients before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and he appears on the list of approved defense counsel at the International Criminal Court at The Hague and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
He considers the following information very useful for lawyers: "In the courtroom, there are three things for the lawyer to always consider: the knowns, the known unknowns, and the unknown unknowns. Whether at the prosecution or defense table, it is the lawyer's job to master the first two and always be prepared for the third. One of the unknown unknowns should never be the person you are defending." - Michael Connelly, The Fifth Witness.
Mr. Skolnik maintains membership with the Montreal Criminal Defense Association, Quebec Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, International Criminal Bar Association, International Criminal Defense Attorneys Association, Association of Commonwealth Criminal Lawyers, Association of Defense Lawyers for International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the Lord Reading Law Society.
In his spare time, Mr. Skolnik enjoys golfing, exercising at the gym, jogging and karate. In the years to come, Mr. Skolnik seeks continued growth in his field. In addition, he would like to become involved in the teaching arena.
