LAUREL, MD, April 02, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- April is Financial Literacy Month and a new study suggests the need for financial education in America is greater than ever especially among minorities.
The wealth gap between White and African-American families nearly tripled between 1984 and 2009 and government policy is largely to blame, according to a new study called "The Roots of the Widening Racial Wealth Gap: Explaining the Black-White Economic Divide" conducted by the Institute on Assets and Social Policy.
"The findings of this study on the racial wealth gap should be a wake-up call to policy makers, elected officials, educators, and more importantly African-American families," said Wealth Coach and author Deborah Owens.
Owens is a thought leader and advocate for remedying the wealth disparities of women and minorities. She is the author of three books including the critically acclaimed, A Purse of Your Own: An Easy Guide to Financial Security, published by Simon and Schuster.

The wealth building strategies developed by Owens are featured in the April 2013 issue of Essence Magazine, and speak directly to the challenges facing African-Americans that were identified in the new study on the widening wealth gap.
Owens is available to discuss:
