Michael Cohen Named a Worldwide Who's Who Professional of the Year for Excellence in Financial Services

    OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA, May 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael Cohen, Self-Employed International Consultant, has been named a Worldwide Who's Who Professional of the Year in Financial Services. While inclusion in Worldwide Who's Who is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Who's Who membership.

Mr. Cohen has more than four decades of experience, with 12 years in his current role. Prior to that he was Principal Actuary at a leading international consulting firm in Ottawa, Canada. In addition to actuarial science, his areas of expertise include regulatory reform, banking and finance, pension and insurance analysis, risk management, governance and program management.

On a day-to-day basis, he meets with government agency officials in developing and emerging countries to help them effectively manage risk and strengthen regulations governing pension funds and insurance industry products. In addition to traveling and consulting with industry and government representatives, he writes manuals on economics and actuarial science.
Prior to transitioning into the domestic and international consulting arena in 1988, Mr. Cohen was director general of the pension benefits division of the Canadian government's Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions. In this capacity, he worked to formulate and put in place revisions to pension regulations. Additionally, he has consulted with members of the Department of Finance and the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency on tax reform issues affecting pension plans and contributed to policies affecting the regulation of insurance products.

Mr. Cohen has taught numerous courses on actuarial science and is the author of Implementing Risk-Based Supervisions in Emerging Markets, published in 2012 by Lambert Academic Publishing. He has also appeared on television and radio to discuss pension reform and regulation. Mr. Cohen began his career in the life insurance industry.

The keys to his professional success, says Mr. Cohen, have been his aptitude in mathematics and his ability to listen effectively to stakeholders. In the years to come, Mr. Cohen hopes to continue to travel to countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bhutan, Mongolia, Tanzania, Turkmenistan and Sierra Leone to help agency officials there develop effective pension and insurance oversight policies.

Mr. Cohen is fluent in French, English and Spanish and holds a master's and bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Cambridge in England. He is a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and an active member of the Society of Actuaries.
