Imperial War Museum to Reopen with a Bang

Horrible Histories exhibition set to draw visitors to one of London's most interesting quarters when museum reopens after major refurbishment reports LondonTown.com

LONDON, ENGLAND, May 23, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- London's Imperial War Museum in Waterloo has been closed since January for a major GBP135 million redevelopment but it will reopen with a bang on June 29th when the prime attraction will be a new family exhibition, Horrible Histories: Spies, based on the popular children's books by Terry Deary.

The museum's new look will also include a new programme of contemporary art and photography and a rehang of the museum's art collection, while further refurbishment will ensure the museum's First World War galleries are ready for the centenary of the conflict in August 2014. The Spies exhibition will immerse visitors in the eye-opening world of Second World War espionage, including codes and ciphers, disguises, camouflage, forgeries and gadgets. Kids will get the chance to dress up, snoop, pry and crack secret codes. The spy theme will continue in Secret War, an ongoing IWM London exhibition exploring the fascinating world of espionage, covert operations and the work of Britain's Special Forces, whose number including James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Both the exhibitions are listed on LondonTown.com.

What visitors may not realise is that the Imperial War Museum is located just a short walk from one of London's secret gems. Waterloo is one of London's most interesting quarters. It is centred around Lower Marsh, an old market street that is now lined with interesting boutiques and bric-a-brac shops, great cheap food places, specialist bookshops and London's only outdoor graffiti gallery - a multi-coloured subway on Leake Street that is home to some of London's most dynamic street art. It's also just a short hop from here to the South Bank, where there is always something exciting taking place - from outdoor theatre and street food to live music and second-hand book markets.
