NORCROSS, GA, June 10, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- J. Martinez, gourmet coffee suppliers, note that 2012 was a record year for coffee exports. According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), coffee exports rose 8.2 percent, 113 million bags, due to higher demand.
The demand for Robusta varieties increased. Robusta is less expensive than Arabica beans and has higher caffeine content. The Robusta export increased by 24 percent while the Arabica fell slightly.
Brazil, Vietnam and Indonesia are major producers of the Robusta varieties. Vietnam coffee production rose 6.9 percent in 2012 and Indonesia rose 72 percent. Vietnam shipped 25.47 million bags and Indonesia shipped 10.62 million bags, whereas last year, Indonesia shipped 6.15 million bags.
Coffee is Vietnam's second largest export commodity. Coffee from Vietnam can now be found in more than 80 countries and regions. Their coffee is cheaper in the world market but they have an advantage due to their volume.
Despite a 15 percent decline in shipments, Brazil continues to be the world's number one exporter of coffee. In 2012, they produced 28.26 million bags of coffee. In 2011, the shipments totaled 33.5 million bags. The ICO lowered its predictions for the year 2013 due to concern about the weather conditions in Brazil. The weather conditions could affect the quality of the beans.
An overview of retail prices for 2012 showed the highest increase to be in Finland (38.6). Other countries that showed a significant increase in their retail prices were Lithuania (38.5), Latvia (34.4) and the U.S., which increased retail prices by 32.9 percent. Germany, Portugal and Japan showed the lowest retail price increases.
"It is important that as retailers, we keep an eye on the exporting trends around the world. A fluctuation in pricing has an impact on our day-to-day operations," stated John Martinez of J. Martinez & Company.
