Donna M. Furlong, RN, BSN, Recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Postoperative Cardiac Surgery Nursing

    BOSTON, MA, June 3, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Donna M. Furlong, RN, BSN, Registered Nurse, for Massachusetts General Hospital, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in postoperative cardiac surgery nursing.

"Everyday is all about doing your absolute best," says Donna M. Furlong, a registered nurse for Massachusetts General Hospital. Specializing in postoperative cardiac surgery nursing, she has provided the best care for her patients for the past 40 years, treating them with integrity. She is primarily responsible for administering immediate postoperative care for cardiac surgery patients and precepting critical care nurses and new graduates, in addition to mentoring.

Ms. Furlong follows the saying: "New nurses are our future, and we need to be committed to their success." She is fueled by the enthusiasm brought in by each new generation of nurses. A single mother, she is proud to have raised her two children on her own. Nursing is who she is, not what she does. She considers herself a person who handles crises well and enjoys the fast pace of the intensive care unit.

Massachusetts General Hospital is the third oldest general hospital in the United States and the oldest and largest hospital in New England. In 2012, it was named America's best hospital by U.S. News & World Report based on its quality of care, patient safety and reputation in 16 different specialties. Ms. Furlong takes pride in her ability to build relationships with her patients and their families, and received a letter of support from her clinical nurse specialist stating, "[Her] nursing practice embodies the core values and philosophy of the ideal nurse, while [she], herself, is the example of what someone looks like who loves to come to work every day." Ms. Furlong names being formally recognized as a clinical scholar by the Massachusetts General Hospital as the highlight of her career.

Ms. Furlong became a registered nurse in 1973 from The Cooley Dickinson Hospital School of Nursing. Eleven years later, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Salem State College, now Salem State University. She holds Basic Life Support Certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and is a Certified New Graduate Critical Care Nurse Preceptor. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and the Salem State College Nursing Honor Society. She also supports the nonprofit organization, Friends Fighting Breast Cancer, a volunteer fundraising group who have raised more than $850,000 for breast cancer research with 100 percent of the proceeds are directed to The Center for Cancer Risk Analysis at Massachusetts General Hospital. As the years progress, Ms. Furlong plans to continue as a registered nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital and spend more time traveling.
