SAN DIEGO, CA, June 05, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A recent study published in the May issue of the official medical journal from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that 98 percent of women who choose breast augmentation say that the results either met or exceeded their expectations, a reaction that San Diego plastic surgeon Dr. John T. Alexander, II (http://www.alexandersurgery.com) has seen reflected in his own patients as well.
"Those numbers don't surprise me at all," says Dr. Alexander, a breast augmentation specialist in San Diego. "Most of my patients have planned ahead a long time before committing to breast implants, and the anticipation just makes them even more pleased with the results once they're ready to move forward."
The published survey looked at 225 women who received breast augmentation surgery within a five-year period, and measured satisfaction ratings based on interviews that took place at least one month after their procedure. The average patient age was 34, and the average implant size was 390 cc. The majority of these breast augmentations were performed using saline implants with a submuscular placement (the implant was placed below the pectoral muscle as well as the glandular breast tissue).
As far as feelings about the physical results of their procedures, 85 percent of respondents rated their new breast size as being "just right," while 13 percent would have chosen larger implants and less than two percent would have gone smaller. Over half of the women surveyed gave the overall results of their breast augmentation a perfect 10, with 98 percent of respondents stating that the results either met or exceeded their expectations.
"What's really impressive, beyond how many breast augmentation patients love their results, is the other positive impacts breast augmentation can have on a woman's life," adds Dr. Alexander. " Improved self-esteem was reported by 92 percent of the respondents following their breast augmentation, and 64 percent said their quality of life had improved. Before surgery, 86 percent of the women surveyed said they were self-conscious about their breasts, while only 13 percent were self-conscious after surgery."
Breast augmentation was the top cosmetic surgery procedure for all of 2012, and has been in the top five surgical procedures every year since 2006. The popularity of breast augmentation has increased as surgical techniques have improved, and also in conjunction with the return of silicone implants to the market. Breast augmentation has a 93 percent "worth it" rating from the popular online plastic surgery website RealSelf.com.
"We think of breast augmentation as a procedure that just changes women's physical appearance," says Dr. Alexander, who treats both men and women at his San Diego cosmetic surgery practice. "But I know that the majority of my patients experience significant psychological improvements after surgery as well."
