Father's Day Profile: How One Dad's Birth Experience Created a New Industry - BIOVIDEO Provides Priceless Gift of Baby's First Movie to All New Families in the Hospital

Frustrated at filming his baby's first day of life, one first-time dad created a novel way to produce breathtaking movies of all newborn babies - and gift them free of charge to new parents - before they leave the hospital.

SAN ANTONIO, TX, June 12, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In 2005, Carlos Villasenor and his wife Sylvia arrived at the hospital to give birth to their first child, Mariana. After 2 heartbreaking miscarriages, the couple was thrilled to finally bring their beautiful baby girl into the world, and the proud dad wanted to capture every priceless memory on film.

While the birth went without problem, Carlos' mission of filming the most special moments was rockier than expected. Everything seemed to go wrong for the anxious new dad.

"I was a nervous wreck, worrying about charging the camera, changing memory cards, and trying to preserve every priceless moment on film. The camera on the video camera ran down. That's when I discovered I had left the charging cable at home. Then the memory card filled up within hours, and I didn't have another one," he explained. When he decided to edit the clips into a movie as a gift for family and friends that Christmas, he realized that he wasn't in the film, as he had been behind the camera instead of beside his wife during many heartwarming moments. "I made up my mind then and there that I'd never have to choose between holding my wife's hand and holding the camera. No dad should have to make that choice."

So the young newspaper executive became an entrepreneur, and founded BIOVIDEO to film and edit videos of a family's first day together at San Jose hospital in Monterrey Mexico the next year. The program was so popular with maternity patients that other hospitals requested the service, and soon BIOVIDEO movies were available to new parents in 90% of all the leading private hospitals in the key Mexican cities of Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

A few years later, Carlos moved his family, then with 3 young daughters, to San Antonio to expand the BIOVIDEO vision to US families and hospitals.

To answer the question on everyone's mind, Villasenor explains, "We capture the Hallmark moments and not the Natural Geographic moments." The company starts filming immediately after birth, starting with baby being weighed and foot printed, and then captures many emotional moments with the parents, family and friends meeting the baby for the first time.

BIOVIDEO has filmed and edited more than 150,000 custom videos since the company was founded in 2006. While this level of production volume appears a mind-boggling challenge, BIOVIDEO does it with yet another near impossible hurdle - each movie is presented in person to the family before they take the newly-born baby home, generally 24 to 48 hours after the baby is born.

BIOVIDEO has a staff of videographers who work 12 hours a day inside the maternity ward to film the most heartwarming moments of a new baby's first day of life and then transform them into a priceless movie, which is debuted to the new parents on a tablet computer right in the room. The video becomes instantly available online on each family's personal web page on Biovideo.com, and can be viewed and shared before they leave the hospital.

What makes the program truly remarkable is that the service is free to both hospitals and the patients.

Villasenor explains, "Babies don't come into the world with an instruction manual. So I sought out the experts in the field of child care, and partnered with them to bring their insights and expertise to new parents. Leading brands like Pampers and Little Remedies sponsor the production of the videos, and at the same time provide valuable information and product samples to new parents to help them when they arrive home with the new baby."

"It's a WIN - WIN - WIN situation, where everyone receives more than they expect," says Villasenor. "Parents are overwhelmed by the quality of the video we deliver. The hospitals provide a priceless gift to their patients which showcases the best experience anyone will ever have with a medical institution. And the brand sponsors value the access to new parents at the precise moment they need their products and expertise - in the hospital right after baby is born."

For the past 8 years, Villasenor has dedicated his energies to perfecting the Biovideo filming and editing process, and adapting the business model to the US. The challenges have been daunting. "The size and scope of the US market is overwhelming, and to build a business with the potential to serve 4 million new births each year is incredible." So is the legal situation, with liability concerns unimaginable in Mexico. "It often takes up to 6 months just for a hospital's legal department to review our agreement and give its blessing, even after the CEO has approved it. Who says things work slower south of the border?" he laughs.

And most important is his passion for quality. "Each BIOVIDEO is a custom movie created just for one new family, a priceless memory they will keep and replay over and over again as a baby grows up. We have to film and edit each movie as carefully and lovingly as a dad would his own movie - and like I did with my daughter's movie," he explains. "It's got to be perfect. And that is our biggest responsibility and my greatest concern every single day."

He continues, "Each BIOVIDEO is my gift to a new mom - and a new dad - and I am blessed to have both the calling and the ability to make this dream come true. As a dad, it's my Father's Day gift to every new family we touch."

New parents express their happiness with their baby's first movie throughout BIOVIDEO's Facebook page, MyBiovideo, declaring the overwhelming emotion they experienced when they first saw the movie of their baby's first day of life. According to Desiree Kuitchers, who delivered her first child last August, "Tears of joy shot out of my eyes when I saw my BIOVIDEO. Thank you so much for those wonderful memories you captured for us. I cried it was so beautiful!"

The US is about to become more joyful - and experience even more tears of joy - as BIOVIDEO rolls out its free services to cover even more hospitals and births across the country. "Retailers will need to stock up on facial tissues to handle the flood of tears that are on their way," laughs Villasenor.

He should know; he has 3 BIOVIDEOs of his own to watch with 3 growing daughters ages 5 to 8.
