ATO Targets for 2012 - 2013 Tax Year

Article on Australian Tax Office and the targets for this financial year.

WEST PERTH, AUSTRALIA, June 27, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Each year the Australian Tax Office picks out a number of occupations and uses them as a target to investigate their tax returns in more detail. The target is usually based on occupations which have had problems with tax returns in previous years.

The Major jobs on target for this financial year 2012/2013 are Sales Managers, Marketing Managers, Building Construction Managers and building labourers. The Australian Tax Office has already sent out over 218,000 letters to people living and working in Australia in those fields.

When the ATO contacts the selected people from the occupations list they send them a list of rules for what can be claimed and what is not allowed to be claimed. Plumbers and people with jobs in the IT sector were the major targets last year, and the ATO sent out letters instructing them to check their claims and expenses meticulously before submitting them.

The ATO does not just target the groups that they have sent the letters to, the office may still scrutinise your claims in order to make sure all of the deductions conform to the rules and are legitimate claims. Some people have made the mistake of claiming for expenses twice, not having all of the receipts to back up the claims, claiming for items in the home as if they are items for their business, trying to claim for two separate forms of transport and claiming for expenses that have already been reimbursed by an employer.

Advice for anybody at this time of year, whether you are targeted by the ATO or not, is to ensure that extra care gets taken when you file your return and if necessary use an experienced accountant or tax consultant.

If you need additional help with your tax return you may commission the help of a company such as Mr Tax Refund who can process all of your paperwork via email or fax and processes your claim aided by a 30 minute telephone conversation. This sort of company may be able to deposit your tax rebate into your bank account within 24 hours. The process can help immensely because the dedicated tax accountant can talk you through what information is needed and you provide that info via email or fax or sometimes even SMS, and they do the processing for you.

The Australian Tax Office will expect you to be honest and to only claim for legitimate deductions on your tax return, so always ensure that if you are processing your paperwork yourself, you fill in your claim honestly and openly and only claim for things that are allowed, and if you have had your reminder letter then remember to be very vigilant as the ATO may be assessing your claims extra carefully as you are on "the list".
