VANCOUVER, BC, June 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In Defending Jacob, author William Landay weaves an intricate legal tale of tragic murder, finger-pointing and small-town politics. The novel follows the story of Assistant District Attorney Andy Barber, who is on the case immediately when a 14-year-old boy is murdered in his small town of Newton, Massachusetts. However, evidence soon turns up that puts Andy's son Jacob firmly in the suspect's chair. Although he is removed from the case, Andy immediately sets about trying to prove his son's innocence.
Landay served as ADA in a small town in Massachusetts for eight years, so the novel is bogged down at the start with legalese and starts slowly as we plod through Andy's own feelings and the legal unfolding of the case. However, the pace picks up considerably halfway through and the end has a twist that has become familiar in crime novels of late (think The Dinner by Herman Koch, and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn).
It's a fast read once the book gets going and it will leave you thinking when you put it down. Some questions are never answered while others just lead you to ponder what you would do in each character's position. The author is also effective at showing the story from various people's perspectives - would you be one of the townspeople, wanting justice no matter what the cost? Would you be Andy, making questionable choices in the name of saving his son at any cost? And of course the main takeaway question of the novel, some might say, is the topic of the 'murder gene' (this is not a spoiler, it's brought up fairly early in the novel and is a worthwhile debate).
As we head into summer and beach reads, this is a good one to pick up!
