BEVERLY HILLS, CA, July 03, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A global film star and former Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Angelina Jolie recently made the decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy after being diagnosed as a carrier of the BRAC breast cancer gene, a choice made possible in part by the advances in breast augmentation techniques and the breast implants themselves, according to Dr. David N. Sayah, one of the surgeons at the Simply Breasts (http://www.simplybreasts.com) breast augmentation center in Los Angeles.
Jolie, 37, was told by her doctors that she carried an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer. This data combined with a family history of breast and ovarian cancer on her mother's side led to her decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy in order to reduce the likelihood of developing breast cancer in the future. Following surgery, her doctors say that her breast cancer risk has now dropped to less than five percent.
"The new anatomical breast implants and improved surgical techniques available for patients today help make this kind of difficult decision less agonizing," says Dr. Sayah, one of the Los Angeles breast augmentation specialists at Simply Breasts. "Knowing that you can get beautiful, natural results with implants does weigh heavily in this type of situation."
Jolie chose anatomical implants for her surgery, which are shaped like teardrops to mimic the shape of the natural breast. The new Natrelle 410 implants, approved this year by the FDA, are filled with a highly cohesive silicone gel that looks and feels more like breast tissue. The form-stable implants are nicknamed "gummy bear implants" for their shape and texture, and have been in popular use throughout Europe and Canada for many years already.
For standard breast augmentations, round implants filled with either silicone or saline can typically be used to achieve positive results. However, for women undergoing breast reconstruction, the implant type takes on new importance. During a cosmetic augmentation, implants are placed either below the existing glandular tissue of the breast or under the chest muscles as well as the breast tissue. In reconstructive surgery like Jolie's, which leaves very little natural tissue, choosing an implant that looks and feels like regular breast tissue as much as possible before surgery is critical to achieving natural results.
"Gummy bear style implants have changed the possibilities of reconstructive surgery," says Dr. Sayah. "At Simply Breasts, we focus on using the right type of implant needed for each individual woman to get outstanding results that feel and look natural, whether undergoing reconstructive surgery or choosing cosmetic breast enhancement."
In addition to silicone and saline implants, breast augmentation can also be performed using fat transfer. The fat augmentation process involves removing fat cells from the patient's body and treating them for reinjection directly to the breasts. The fatty tissue adds volume to the breasts without the need for artificial implants. Breast augmentation via fat transfer may be performed on its own, or can be incorporated along with a traditional augmentation to deliver more comprehensive results.
