First and foremost, companies should understand that March 26th began a countdown for compliance: within 180 days (by September 23rd, 2013), covered entities must be in compliance with most of the new HIPAA regulations. The most important, and potentially most difficult, of the new regulations regards business associates. The new rules expand HIPAA coverage and liability to the business associates of covered entities, including contractors.
