NORCROSS, GA, July 17, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Southern Environmental Medicine Center, an Atlanta integrative medicine clinic, has noticed a disturbing increase in diagnoses of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and a recently published study in JAMA Pediatrics concurs with this theory.
According to the study, children were being diagnosed 24% more frequently with ADHD in 2010 than they were in 2001. Atlanta natural health clinic Southern Environmental Medicine Center believes that these numbers have only continued to increase as time has passed.
The study also investigated how ADHD diagnosis rates had changed among specific races and between genders. For white, black, and Hispanic children, diagnosis rates all increased, whereas Asian/Pacific Islander children and other groups remained largely unchanged. Generally, rates between genders stayed relatively similar to their previous numbers for each race, except in black children, where girls have shown a notable increase in diagnosis. The study hypothesized that this data was caused by a previously existing gender disparity beginning to close.
Most interestingly to the holistic doctors in Atlanta, GA, the study found that children living in high-income households had an increased likelihood that they would be diagnosed as having ADHD.
"You would think that children with access to the best in medical care and housing would have lower rates of ADHD," says Dr. Susan Tanner, Principle Practitioner at Southern Environmental Medicine Center. "But the opposite is true. I can't help but believe that this is further evidence that environment plays a huge role in ADHD development."
