Cataract Prevalence Increases with Houston Baby Boomer Population Growth

"At The Eye Clinic of Texas we see the cataract trend in Houston is consistent with the overall US data indicating that since 2000, there is a 19% increase in people over 40 having cataracts" commented Cataract Surgeon Bernard Milstein, MD.

GALVESTON, TX, July 30, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "It's really not a big surprise that the numbers of those affected by cataracts continues to grow, especially with the aging baby boomer population in and around Houston," he noted. "The good news is that with the modern cataract surgery and advanced technology lens implants we are able to provide our patients safe and effective cataract surgery and lens implants with short, comfortable recovery times and fairly quick restoration of vision so they can resume their occupations and recreational activities within a couple of days," explained Dr. Milstein.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. About 24 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts and more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by age 80. A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye preventing light rays from passing through it easily. Symptoms of cataracts may include a clouding or blurring of vision, sensitivity to light and glare, double vision or shadowing in one eye, fading or yellowing of colors and poor night vision, sometimes with haloes around lights.

Cataract Surgeon Dr. Da-Thuy Van shared "For many patients the onset of cataracts is slow and progressive. But, then they notice difficulties or discomfort with blurry or cloudy vision, night driving or with sunlight and they bring this to our attention. We counsel patients that if a cataract begins to interfere with the comfort and safety of their daily activities, then it is time to consider cataract surgery and lens implants."

Regarding the need for glasses after cataract surgery, Dr. Van explained "It seems that the baby boomers in particular really don't want the hassle of wearing glasses after cataract surgery. They have grown accustomed to their freedom and lifestyle without glasses. Fortunately, we use advanced technology intraocular toric lens implants that allow us to correct astigmatism after cataract surgery without glasses and even lens implants that correct the near vision focusing problem called presbyopia as well as distance vision without requiring bifocals or reading glasses for the vast majority of patients."
