Fairfield County Surgeon on Cataract Prevalence with Baby Boomer Increase

"It is apparent that there is an increase of cataracts in Fairfield County that pretty much mirrors the increase in the prevalence of cataracts nationally which is driven by the baby boomer population aging," commented Dr. Leslie Doctor.

WESTPORT, CT, August 03, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Connecticut Cataract Surgeon Leslie Doctor, M.D. commented on the changing demographics of cataract patients in Fairfield County. "Our eye care practice is truly multigenerational in that it was started about 50 years ago by my parents who were both Connecticut ophthalmologists. We regularly see entire Fairfield County families-aging parents, their children who are now often baby boomers in their 50's and 60's and grandchildren and even great grandchildren. This gives us a real cross sectional observation of the eye care demographics in Fairfield County.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. About 24 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts and more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by age 80. A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye preventing light rays from passing through it easily. Symptoms of cataracts may include a clouding or blurring of vision, sensitivity to light and glare, double vision or shadowing in one eye, fading or yellowing of colors and poor night vision, sometimes with haloes around lights.

"The increasing prevalence of Fairfield County cataracts has resulted in a greater need for cataract surgery and lens implants, but it has also challenged us to address the specific needs of the baby boomers and their lifestyles when considering cataract surgery. First, a greater number of Connecticut baby boomers with cataracts are still working and actively employed as compared to the Connecticut seniors who are in need of cataract surgery. They tend to be less tolerant of blurry or cloudy vision, glare sensitivity or night driving problems as it disturbs their driving safety and ability to be effective at work. So, we see the baby boomers hesitant to delay their cataract surgery-they want it now and they want good vision shortly after surgery. Also, they are anxious to get back to work and really require as brief, convenient and comfortable recovery as possible. Fortunately, for most patients I am able to perform their cataract surgery with only eye drops for anesthesia, with a very tiny incision and no need for sutures-and this indeed gives them a quick comfortable recovery, explained Dr. Doctor.

"As a Corneal Specialist & LASIK Surgeon I am seeing more and more baby boomers who had LASIK in their 40's and 50"s and are now in their 60's-have cataracts-and have really enjoyed freedom from the hassle of wearing glasses. Not surprisingly, if possible they want to avoid being dependent on eyeglasses after their cataract surgery. In many instances we are able offer patients who previously had LASIK, toric lens implants to correct astigmatism or even multifocal lens implants to correct near vision focusing problems and distance vision without requiring bifocals or reading glasses," remarked Dr. Leslie Doctor.
