Baltimore Cataract Surgeons Strive for Easier Recovery with Laser Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. About 24 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts and more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by age 80. A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye preventing light rays from passing through it easily. Symptoms of cataracts may include a clouding or blurring of vision, sensitivity to light and glare, double vision or shadowing in one eye, fading or yellowing of colors and poor night vision, sometimes with haloes around lights.

Cataract Surgeon Brad Spagnolo, M.D. explained, "When we see someone with a cataract who complains of difficulties with blurry or cloudy vision, night driving problems or with sunlight glare that begins to interfere with the convenience and safety of their daily activities, then we encourage them to consider having cataract surgery and lens implants. Whereas with a population of much older seniors we are concerned about delaying cataract surgery because it can expose them to a greater risk of falls and hip fractures, with baby boomer so many are still working that any decrease in their vision from cataracts that limits in their ability to get back and forth to work and be productive at work is really undesirable. Basically, they need and want good vision now which is consistent with the baby boomer instant gratification lifestyle.

Generally, they want to be independent of eyeglasses if possible after their cataract surgery. For many patients who previously had LASIK, we are able to offer them toric lens implants to correct astigmatism or even multifocal lens implants to correct near vision focusing problems and distance vision without requiring bifocals or reading glasses," remarked Dr. Spagnolo.
