Leonard B. Smith, DDS Recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Dentistry

    CALGARY, AB, CANADA, August 6, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Leonard B. Smith,President of Leonard B Smith Professional Corp., has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in pediatric dentistry.

For more than four decades, Dr. Smith has been providing oral health care to generations of patients; children who are healthy as well as those with special needs from newborns on. He has been in private practice since 1972, being the first formally trained pediatric dentist in Calgary. Concurrent to his practice, he was the chief of the dental department at the Alberta Children's Hospital and a consultant to their hemophilia and cleft palate teams.

The Society For A Healthy Mouth Healthy Child (Alberta) and the Foundation For A Healthy Mouth Healthy Child in the U.S.A were founded by Dr. Smith in order to allow him to give back to the Community that he has served for all of his years in practice. He noticed a serious increase in the incidence of early childhood caries (ECC) locally and then discovered that this was a problem throughout North America.

ECC, which can begin at as early as 9 months of age, can and does spread to include all of a child's teeth. It is an infectious disease and if it is not treated or treatment is delayed - a form of child neglect/abuse - it can lead to serious health issues that can impact the child for their entire lives.

Dr. Smith realized that there was a great need to provide the public compelling evidence that ECC was a disease that was about more than just baby teeth; through awareness campaigns, he was able to teach why it is critical to begin preventive dental care from the child's first feeding in order to stop the occurrence of ECC.

Children with untreated and severe ECC have been associated with iron and protein deficiencies, anemia, elevated stress hormones, sleep deprivation , chronic pain, and infection. All of these factors can and do impact the architecture of the brain and can result in other systemic changes that can negatively impact the child for a lifetime.

In honor of his exceptional work, Dr. Smith has been granted a life membership in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and in the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He also received the integrity award from the downtown Rotary Club of Calgary He has been featured in Pro-Files Magazine and on the Worldwide Broadcasting Network. Passionate about the field, he attributes his success to his caring nature and hard work.

Dr Smith has a DDS degree from the University of Alberta,a Msc. degree from The Ohio State University and a Certification in Pediatric Dentistry from The Ohio State University. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. Dr. Smith is also a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a clinical assistant professor in the Department Of Pediatrics, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and an associate member of the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute for Child and Maternal Health.

Dr. Smith is planning to expand the awareness program by speaking and concurrently, through the not-for-profit organizations, have volunteer oral health professionals put on free assessment clinics for children 12 months and younger.
