NORCROSS, GA, August 09, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tampa sinkhole repair experts, Ram Jack, note a recent story in the Tampa Bay Times which reported that over half (54 percent) of sinkhole-damaged homes reported in Hernando County last year still have not been fixed, and that even more (57 percent) of the homes damaged by sinkholes in the first quarter of 2013 have still not been repaired. The numbers are similar in neighboring Pasco County.
The Geology of Sinkholes
Sinkholes are often caused when acidic rainwater dissolves limestone or similar rock beneath the soil, leaving a void that collapses when it is unable to support whatever is on top of it. Florida is particularly prone to sinkholes because it is built on limestone.
Why So Many Unrepaired Sinkholes?
The Tampa Bay Times article says that although some homeowners have received insurance payments for the sinkholes, they have not made the repairs. However, the article notes that in some cases, the insurance money has simply not been enough to cover the repairs. Not only do these unrepaired Tampa sinkholes pose a danger to the homeowners, but they also have decreased property values by millions of dollars. This also means lost tax revenue for the area.
As bad as these figures sound, they are an improvement over two years ago, before revisions were made to Florida's sinkhole insurance laws. At that time, 71 percent of sinkhole-damaged homes were unrepaired. The number of sinkholes in Tampa and nearby areas has decreased over the past couple of years. Nonetheless, stories about large sinkholes that continue to make national news do not help the reputation of the area, which has gained the unfortunate moniker of "sinkhole alley."
