LONDON, ENGLAND, August 12, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The London Edition hotel from Marriott Hotels and Ian Schrager will open on Berners Street in London's Fitzrovia on Thursday 12th September 2013 and is one of two new luxury hotels opening in London in September 2013, adding to the wide choice of luxury London hotels already available in the city.
The hotel will emerge from its GBP33 million makeover with 173 rooms and suites featuring light-wood floors and wood panelled walls creating a cosy, cabin-like feel. Facilities include a 24-hour fitness centre with a spa by ESPA and indoor swimming pool, a private screening room and nightclub, free WiFi, a dance club, restaurant and a lounge called the Punch Room.
Pollen Street Social chef-proprietor Jason Atherton is the chef behind the hotel's restaurant which will be called Berner's Tavern - in recognition of to the former Berner's Hotel which used to stand on this spot in Berners Street. Berner's Tavern will be Atherton's fourth London restaurant and will be headed up by long-term colleague Phil Carmichael who will reintroduce the sharing concept that Atherton was famed for at Maze, the Mayfair restaurant he ran with Gordon Ramsay until 2010.
American hotel group Ace hotels, a chain co-founded by Alex Calderwood, comes to Shoreditch in East London in September 2013, expanding from their US sites to add a London outpost, Ace Hotel London Shoreditch at 100 Shoreditch High Street, E1.
Ace hotels intend to bring a "locally-inspired approach to design and development" which in London means that the Shoreditch High Street site, formerly a 10-year-old Crowne Plaza, becomes a trendy hotel with facade and interiors updated by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby of Universal Design Studio.
The hotel's restaurants will be run by the people behind popular London restaurants Bistrotheque in Bethnal Green and Shrimpy's in King's Cross Filling Station with Square Mile Coffee Roasters on site. Ace Hotel London Shoreditch is due to open in September 2013.
Meanwhile, the opening of the Shard's luxury Shangri-La Hotel, which was originally planned for the second quarter of 2013, has been set back until October. The hotel, which is costing GBP40million to fit out, will have 202 deluxe guestrooms, averaging more than 42 square metres (452 square feet), making them among the largest in London.
The hotel will also offer three wining and dining options, including a gourmet deli on the ground floor, a destination restaurant and lounge on level 35, and a signature bar on level 52.
A spokesperson for Shangri-La Hotels said: "We are currently scheduled to open in Q4 2013, meaning guests will soon be able to enjoy London's first luxury elevated hotel in Renzo Piano's iconic architectural masterpiece."
