OREGON, WI, September 10, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Helical Robotics is advancing technology that will make inspection and maintenance ships and other large steel structures faster and more cost effective. Use of HR-MP robotic platforms promise to improve safety and reduce liability and personnel costs. The HR-MP20, for example, weighs less than 40lbs, and has a lifting capacity of 20lbs. Its compact and versatile design allows operations to be conducted on a wide range of towers, ships, pipelines, and tanks, and deployment takes less than one minute. Other offerings include the HR-MP5 and HR-MP100, with more sizes under development.

The HR-MP20 was recently demonstrated onboard the S.S. Spartan, a car ferry that operated on Lake Michigan. Its rapid deployment and nimble mobility demonstrated its advantages over conventional access, requiring low overhead and providing easy reach to all surfaces.

The HR-MP line of robotic platforms was originally conceived and designed for operation on Wind Towers. In this arena, operators are able to take advantage of the enhanced safety capabilities and superior weather envelope that is provided by use of the robots.

Since it was first demonstrated, the HR-MP line has proven its performance capabilities on a wide range of ferrous structures. Among these are; ships, pipelines, power line/utility poles, cell towers, field erected tanks, and amusement park rides. Some models are capable of navigating flag poles and highway signage.

"Every day, technology advances and changes the face of industry. These advancements drive the future of our world from better renewable energy to safer bridges and ships. Helical Robotics is pleased to be part of this continuing evolution," says Bruce Schlee, President of Helical Robotics.

The versatile platform can be outfitted with any type of equipment. Remote vision can be used to inspect the climbing surface, such as looking at weld seams on ships or tanks, or focused outward to provide inspection, safety or security observation. Other industrial sensors can be equipped, like ultrasonic or infrared sensors, manipulators, surface cleaners/finishers, welders, sanders, just to name a few.

Beyond transportation, Helical Robotics is currently working with partners to develop products aimed at the Wind Energy Industry, Oil and Gas industry, Infrastructure Construction, and Power Transmission or any other field that must achieve hazardous or difficult access.
