Recycled Vehicle Glass Helps Make 11.6m Bottles in Six Months

    MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, September 15, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It is estimated that a staggering 11.6 million average size bottles* were made using over 775 tonnes of recycled automotive waste glass from Auto Windscreens between January and June this year.

As one of the UK's leading windscreen repair and replacement companies, Auto Windscreens recycles 100% of all its waste glass. In 2012 the company recycled 966 tonnes over the course of the year, a figure that is expected to be closer to 1,500 tonnes in 2013, reflecting a significant increase to work volumes.

Recycling is a weighty issue, agrees Vanessa Jones, Auto Windscreens' Health and Safety Manager, who handles all waste and environmental initiatives for the business. To put 1,500 tonnes into perspective, this is the equivalent of a whopping 218 male African elephants**.

"As an industry we are responsible for what happens next to damaged glass removed from our customers' vehicles and, in the case of Auto Windscreens, we recycle 100% of it," said Vanessa.

She added: "It is truly amazing to think all that unwanted glass has been used to help make millions of bottles. I like the thought that I could be drinking from a bottle that is made partly of a windscreen once belonging to perhaps a Porsche 911, or even a Lamborghini Gallardo!"

Berryman, a leading glass recycling business, is contracted to remove Auto Windscreens' unwanted vehicle glazing and uses its damaged glass, known as cullet, to make around 10-15% of an average bottle. Glass can be reused many times in varying percentages, depending on the clarity of the glass being produced.
