Damon J. Thomas Featured in "Dog Is Good" Exhibition at Buchanan Gallery

    HOUSTON, TX, September 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In "Dog Is Good," mixed-media sculptor Damon J. Thomas explores the age-old relationship between dogs and humans, who have co-evolved with each other throughout the millennia.

Featuring more than 30 works in clay and other media, the exhibit will open Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 from 6-9 p.m. at Buchanan Gallery, located at 302 25th Street in Galveston. The opening will be part of the Galveston ArtWalk event, and the exhibit will continue through Nov. 23.

Some of the works combine people and dogs, while others depict the dog alone, from puppy to fully grown. Crows, another recurring theme in Thomas' work, play a supporting role in this exhibition.

The sculptures are mostly ceramic, covered in crater glaze in varying shades of blue and white. This glaze unifies the exhibition and imparts a deep and soulful surface to the sculptures, at the same time slightly abstracting features to create a hint of mystery. Some of the sculptures are also incorporate found objects.

About Damon J. Thomas

Working in clay, Damon J. Thomas creates figurative art that explores the emotional range of the human condition, from loneliness and alienation, to reaching healing and redemption through self-knowledge and companionship with kindred souls.

Many of Thomas' figures appear to have missing limbs. At first glance this might suggest incompleteness, but on a deeper level, he hopes to communicate the ever-present potential for growth and regeneration.

In addition to his human figures, Thomas also works in organic, nature-inspired forms, where transformation is again a recurrent theme. This body of work includes cocoon-like forms that hint of rebirth, and towering columns that seek to evoke the earth's rhythms. Birds, as symbols of the spirit, are another recurring motif in his work.

A writer for most of his life, Thomas is the co-author of "The Invisible Church: Finding Spirituality Where You Are," a book on psychology and spirituality written with J. Pittman McGehee. A native Houstonian, Thomas lives and makes art in the Houston Heights, near where he was born.
