Art Pottery Discusses Saturday Evening Girls Pottery Featured on Antiques Roadshow

    ATLANTA, GA, September 27, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Two antique pottery tiles which were made by the Saturday Evening Girls were featured on Antiques Roadshow. Art Pottery, an appraiser of American antique pottery, was pleased by this unique find, which appeared on the show in January of 2009.

The Saturday Evening Girls tiles feature a crowing rooster on the first and three calling white geese on the second. They are decorated in cuerda seca with unfinished and unglazed tile designs on the back. Because of the way they were decorated, it is clear that these tiles were intended to be mounted.

The backs of the tiles feature images of North Street and Washington Street, making them more unusual. They were signed and dated on the back by Sarah Gelner, the artist, and engraved with the traditional "SEG."

The appraiser noted that making tiles was an unusual activity for the Saturday Evening Girls. Bowls and plates are far more common, and tiles typically feature special areas of Boston instead of featuring farm animals. Because of their incredibly rare nature, the American pottery tiles were valued between $7,500 and $10,000 as a pair.

"It is exciting to have two such unique and interesting Saturday Evening Girls pieces surface," says Manning Garrett, owner of Art Pottery. "We feel that Suzanne Perrault, the appraiser, was spot on with her assessment of their value. It's unlikely that we will see other SEG pieces of this quality with this kind of subject matter."
