The Best Art Exhibitions and Events in London in October 2013

    LONDON, ENGLAND, October 09, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Frieze and Frieze Masters (17th to 20th October 2013) come to London's Regents Park this October, a month when London's galleries gear up for their busiest week. For art enthusiasts coming to London for Frieze week there's a huge choice of art exhibitions, talks and events so it's worth booking one of the nearby London hotels for an extended stay in the city to take it all in.

Art fairs worth seeing include Moniker which moves to the Truman Brewery and shares the space with The Other Art Fair, PAD London in Mayfair and 1:54, a brand new art fair at Somerset House dedicated to contemporary African art. Christie's in South Kensington hosts the free Multiplied art fair.

Added to these are blockbuster museum exhibitions including 'Pearls' (until 19th January 2014) at the Victoria and Albert Museum where 'Tomorrow', a major new commission by Nordic artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset was unveiled on the first day of the month. The British Museum has the adults-only 'Shunga: Sex and Humour in Japanese Art' from 3rd October and 'Beyond El Dorado', an exhibition of gold artefacts from ancient Colombia, from 17th October 2013.

The Museum of London presents 'The Cheapside Hoard' from 18th October, an extraordinary collection of 16th and early 17th century jewels giving insights into Elizabethan and Jacobean life in London. 'Elizabeth I and Her People' is at the National Portrait Gallery from 10th October, opening the day after 'The Portrait in Vienna 1867-1918' begins at the National Gallery which overlooks Trafalgar Square where Katharina Fritsch's fantastic blue 'Hahn Cock' resides on the Fourth Plinth.

Head to Tate Britain for the last chance to see the Lowry exhibition which finishes on the final day of Frieze week, and where 'Art Under Attack' has just opened. From there it's a pleasant Tate to Tate boat ride to Tate Modern where the Paul Klee exhibition opens on 15th October 2013.

At London's smaller galleries there are exhibitions on Sarah Lucas at the Whitechapel Gallery, Kara Walker at the Camden Arts Centre, James Whistler at the Dulwich Picture Gallery and Albrecht Durer at the Courtauld Gallery all opening in time for Frieze.

Zaha Hadid's newly opened Serpentine Sackler Gallery, a short walk from the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens, opens with 'Adrian Villar Rojas: Today We Reboot The Planet' (until 10th November 2013), the first UK exhibition dedicated to the Argentinian-born artist. And Victoria Miro opens a new gallery in Mayfair, one of the largest commercial spaces in London, with 'White Infinity Nets' (1st October - 9th November 2013), an exhibition on influential Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year returns to the Natural History Museum and shortly after Frieze has finished 'Pop Art Design', the major autumn exhibition at the Barbican, can be seen from 22nd October 2013, 'The Male Nude' opens at the Wallace Collection (on 24th October) and 'Masterpieces of Chinese Painting' begins at the V&A (on 26th October 2013), the same day Honore Daumier begins at the Royal Academy of Arts.
