Dermatologists in the U.K. are calling for a ban on a preservative found in many beauty and household products due to its propensity to cause allergic reactions
BEVERLY HILLS, CA, October 11, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- If you are one of the countless consumers that has fallen prey to the marketing ploys of large skin care companies you are not alone. Each year, top skin care brands spend millions of dollars on flashy ad campaigns and lining up big name celebrity endorsements to get you to buy their products. These ads are working, resulting in Americans spending billions of dollars on skin care products that promise to do everything from relieving dry skin to reversing the signs of aging - only to deliver minimal result!
But now, dermatologists in the U.K. are calling for a ban on a preservative found in many beauty and household products due to its propensity to cause allergic reactions as reported by "The Telegraph":
"The chemical, methylisothiazolinone, is used to prolong shelf life in everything from face powder to baby wipes. It is notorious for causing allergic reactions such as rashes, lumps, blisters, itchy eyes and facial swelling, which is why the British Association of Dermatologists wants a full ban on the preservative.
"The frequency of reactions to [methylisothiazolinone] is unprecedented in my experience. We've never seen anything quite like it," London dermatologist Dr. Ian White tells BBC. "Contact allergy to this permitted preservative is now of epidemic proportions. Immediate action needs to be taken by industry."
Dry skin is caused by a damaged skin barrier that is no longer functioning properly. You skin's barrier is designed to keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. When that barrier stops working, your skin is robbed of its own natural oils that keep your skin moisturized, leaving it dry and cracked. To heal your dry skin you need to restore the your skin's barrier and shield it from harsh chemicals. You also need a dry skin care cream that does not contain methylisothiazolinone or other skin damaging chemicals, like toluene.
A shielding lotion is a new revolution in skin care designed to specifically strengthen the skin's natural barrier, healing dry skin and protecting healthy skin.
Dr Lisa Benest, a board certified dermatologist in Southern California explains why shielding lotions are superior to artificial moisturizers: "A shielding lotion is a lotion that provides a natural barrier on top of the skin to protect it from outside chemicals and irritants. In addition it also acts to keep the moisture and the oils in the skin, so that the skin can heal itself. Shielding lotions not only protect the skin's barrier but they restore the moisture to the skin and allow the skin to continue to moisturize itself, so that your skin does not become addicted on the moisturizer and ultimately cures the dry skin."
