National Fisherman Announces 2013 Highliner Award Winners

Robert Heyano, Dillingham, Alaska, Robert Hezel, Clinton, Washington, and Jerry McCune, Cordova, Alaska, were named 2013 Highliners from the West Coast and Alaska by National Fisherman magazine.



The Highliner Awards honor three commercial fishermen who uphold a standard of excellence in their advocacy of the fishing industry.

    PORTLAND, ME, October 30, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- National Fisherman magazine is proud to announce its 2013 Highliners from the West Coast and Alaska.

- Robert Heyano of Dillingham, Alaska -- president of the Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association and skipper of the 32-foot drift gillnetter Lady Mindy;

- Robert Hezel of Clinton, Wash. -- skipper of the Fishermen's Finest 185-foot Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska trawler U.S. Intrepid, who has devoted his non-fishing hours to the Seattle Fishermen's Memorial, safety at sea and the reduction of trawl bycatch and seafloor impacts; and,

- Jerry McCune of Cordova, Alaska -- president of the United Fishermen of Alaska and the Cordova District Fishermen United, longtime industry lobbyist and skipper of the 33-foot drift gillnetter Wudahad.

The National Fisherman Highliner Awards are an annual tradition that began in 1975. Each year the magazine and its sponsoring partner Furuno honor three commercial fishermen who uphold a standard of excellence in their advocacy of the fishing industry.

The 2012 award winners hailed from the East and Gulf coasts. They were Wayne Werner of Alachua, Fla.; Dewey Hemilright of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; and Kevin Wark of Barnegat Light, N.J. University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology professor and fishery scientist Brian Rothschild of New Bedford, Mass., accepted a Special Award for Lifetime Achievement.
