NEW YORK, NY, November 07, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The 600 Stryker lawsuits consolidated in New Jersey Superior Court are moving along as scheduled. The Stryker Hip Implant Recall Information Center, which provides updates on Stryker hip recall related lawsuits, reports about a recent order in which the court directs parties on matters relating to discovery, including the scope, parameters and timing.
Judge Brian R. Martinotti is overseeing the consolidation of statewide cases. The Oct. 23 order covers discovery-related procedures, in addition to matters such as the mediation of certain Stryker lawsuits, according to court documents (In re: Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Stem and the ABG II Modular Hip Stem Litigation; MCL-296, Bergen County Superior Court, New Jersey).
Lawsuits, Settlements and Side Effects
There are about 350 lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, according to court documents (In re: Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation; MDL-2441, U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota). Stryker recently announced, according to the Wall Street Journal,* that it estimated the cost of litigation for its metal-on-metal ABG II and Rejuvenate hip products will range from $700 million to $1.1 billion. The company recalled those products in 2012.
Metal poisoning is an alleged adverse side effect of metal-on-metal hip implants such as the Stryker ABG II and Rejuvenate, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.** Also referred to as "metallosis," it occurs when cobalt and chromium ions from the friction among the implant's metal components sheds into and accumulates in a patient's bloodstream.
