She became involved in her profession right out of school and began her nursing career at age 18 upon entering the Nurse Education Program at The Royal College of Nursing and Midwifery in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Ms. Harper earned a diploma as a registered general nurse and a registered psychiatric nurse. She went on to specialize in critical care and continued that work when she came to the United States. She worked at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, which according to Ms. Harper "was a fascinating and enlightening place, and she credits her experience there as strengthening her skills and resolve to continue on the path to where she is today. Ms. Harper is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality and a member of the National Association for Healthcare Quality.

In her spare time, she supports a number of worthy causes including local homeless outreach and animal shelters. She enjoys the beach, gardening, reading, cooking for friends and travelling.
