These two words often get confused. 'Past' has many uses whereas 'passed' is always the past tense of 'pass'. Confusion can arise when we talk about passing something, as in, 'walking past' it.

The man passed by the old house every evening on his way home.

BUT:

The man walked past the old house every evening on his way home.

Past can be:
- an adjective - 'past Christmases...'
- a preposition - 'the first house past the intersection...'
- an adverb - 'She flew past him on her bike.'
- or a noun - 'You can't keep reliving the past.'

It can never be a verb.

So -

'The Ghost of Christmas Past passed by slowly.'

'He passed the ball to his teammate.'

'He hurried past the haunted house.'
