At the University of New England, Fraser instructs students enrolled in undergraduate, postgraduate and train-the-trainer medical courses
ARMIDALE, NSW, AUSTRALIA, December 13, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- University of New England Adjunct Professor John Fraser has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in public health and education.
John Fraser is a rural general practitioner and public health physician with extensive clinical, research and teaching experience in remote and rural Australia spanning more than 25 years. His research interests include rural health, public health, medical education, Aboriginal health, and workforce research. In addition, he has been published widely within both Australian and international media, having written more than 120 research papers, conference proceedings and books.
Currently, Fraser holds a variety of rolls in the industry. He serves as a general practitioner and visiting medical officer for the Hunter New England Local Health Network in Manilla, NSW; an adviser to the Centre of Expertise on Hospital and Health Services Management at Naresuan University in Thailand; and as a professor within the academic setting. He teaches within the Schools of Rural Medicine and Health at the University of New England, and the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle.
At the University of New England, Fraser instructs students enrolled in undergraduate, postgraduate and train-the-trainer medical courses. Over the years, he has successfully supervised five doctoral students, and is now specifically responsible for overseeing those active in the doctorate of health served management program. In sharing his expertise with his students, Fraser imparts upon them his outstanding knowledge of public health and Aboriginal health, as well as the clinical skills necessary for taking on skin carcinoma management, geriatrics, drugs and alcohol, mental health and radiography.
Over the years, he has been heralded for his accomplishments and contributions to the field of public health. He has been named Medical Educator of the Year and given honors for the management of patients with mental health conditions, multidisciplinary human factors training, and the promotion of health careers. Fraser is a strong believer that health professionals should advocate for their communities, and feels his success in the industry is due to his own work with disadvantaged groups and his drive to improve equity of access to health care.
He holds a Doctorate of Medicine from The University of Newcastle, Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from James Cook University, and MBBS from The University of Sydney. He also holds diplomas in fertility regulation from the Family Planning Association and RACOG from the Royal Australian College Obstetrics & Gynecology.
