Many Happy Returns: The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel Offers a Pardon and a Prize

For over 80 years, The Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington, DC has served as home to some of our Nation's Capitol's most historic happenings and most celebrated denizens.

/24-7PressRelease/ - WASHINGTON, DC, December 09, 2007 - For over 80 years, The Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington, DC has served as home to some of our Nation's Capitol's most historic happenings and most celebrated denizens. The "Grande Dame" of Connecticut Avenue, often referred to as "Washington's Second Best Address," a term coined by frequent guest President Harry S. Truman, has been the locale of inaugural events, landmark political happenings and esteemed social galas. Many a memory has been made here. As human nature takes its course, perhaps a hotel guest or two has taken a memento- a little souvenir, a Mayflower logo towel here; a teaspoon there- all with each individual's personal sentimental value. Over the course of eighty-some years, that can add up to some significant items walking out the door.

In honor of the debut of Keith McClinsey's book, Images of America: Washington DC's Mayflower Hotel (Arcadia Publishing, ISBN978-0-7385-5256-9, $19.99), a history of the landmark venue, and in the holiday spirit, the hotel is offering an amnesty program to those wishing to return Mayflower items appropriated over the passage of time. In a 21st century twist, many of the hotel's antiquities now on display on its mezzanine level were spotted on EBay and returned to their rightful spot by in-house historian McClinsey.
Beginning on Wednesday, December 5th, and continuing through the New Year, The Mayflower DC Hotel's front desk, will be accepting not only purloined Mayflower 'memorabilia,' but also the stories that go with them—that, the only question asked. Whether of a wedding, honeymoon, family occasion or other life event, these items no doubt have a story to tell—a tale of historic happenings or personal joy.
Those with the best story submitted in print will be treated to a new Mayflower memory—
a legendary afternoon tea at the legendary hotel near the White House, a copy of the new book and hotel walking tour with McClinsey as guide to the antiquities and anecdotes from Mayflower years past. After all, The Mayflower is not only a place where history and memories are made, but where memories are archived, saved and cherished as well.
