APM Cool Explains Causes of Refrigeration Compressor Failure

There are a few common causes of commercial or industrial refrigeration compressor failure that you can look out for in the event that this ever happens to you.

Poor Lubrication

Lack of lubrication, or the loss of it, is one of the primary causes of compressor failure. This can include both floodback and flooded starts. Sometimes the cause is as simple as not having enough oil in the crankcase. Other causes are more complex, such as problems with the suction line. Lack of lubrication can cause overheating and lead to a failing compressor.

Floodback or flooding occurs when liquid refrigerant continuously returns to the compressor during the running cycle. It can be caused by a number of system problems, including the expansion valve, or even something as simple as a dirty filter.

"Slugging" is flooding of the refrigerant in the compressor. This is often caused when the motor overheats or extra voltage goes through the compressor. The best way to protect the compressor from slugging and floodback is installing a suction line accumulator.

Contamination

A "contaminant" in a refrigeration compressor is anything that is not refrigerant or oil. Those are the only things that should be in the system. Contaminants can include air, moisture, dirt or non-condensables. These can make their way into a compressor if the compressor is not properly installed or serviced.

Contamination can be caused when a compressor burns out. The chemical changes caused by a burnout produce soot that can coat the discharge and suction lines.
