BEAVERCREEK, OHIO, January 23, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Leidos senior scientist Richard Bartell has been recognized for consistently demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in many, diverse aspects of electro-optical/infrared research, analysis and program management for both defense-related and commercial applications. His career has been marked throughout by high levels of achievement.
With more than two decades of experience in electro-optical research and project management gained in a broad range of positions in both defense and private industry, Mr. Bartell is an expert in spectral remote sensing and worldwide spectral, spatial and temporal variability of atmospheric path effects. His areas of specialization include engagement modeling, spectral remote sensing, atmospheric propagation, night vision technology, laser physics, commercial product development, and tactical aviation. In a rare combination, his advanced technical skills are coupled with a high level of leadership and management ability, evidenced by achieving the rank of Colonel, USAFR. Mr. Bartell's success with technical startup operations throughout his career is noteworthy. He has exceled in establishing collaborative, team-oriented environments.
Mr. Bartell has been interested in applications of remote sensing since serving as an F-111 Instructor Weapons Systems Officer in the U.S. Air Force. He went on to pursue this interest at the University of Arizona, where he obtained a Master of Science in Optical Sciences in 1987 studying under Dr. Phil Slater. Mr. Bartell also holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics, with a concentration in Astronautics, from the U.S. Air Force Academy, from which he was a distinguished graduate. He obtained a number of industry-related certifications including Certified Systems Engineering Professional. His prior positions include senior optical engineer at Logicon Technical Services, senior project engineer at LaserMike, and program manager for the Hyperspectral System Image Model (HySIM) at Veridian Systems. He also served as Director of Modeling and Simulation, while employed with Riverside Research, for the Air Force Institute of Technology, where he led development of the unique High Energy Laser End-to-End Operational Simulation high energy laser engagement model for the U.S. Department of Defense community. His team won the Air Force Modeling and Simulation
Award for Planning in 2007. This is one of numerous awards Mr. Bartell has received throughout the course of his career. Most recently Mr. Bartell provided a wide range of consulting services as a designated Riverside Research Senior Technical Expert. His role entailed leveraging a detailed understanding of spectral phenomenology to develop new spectral exploitation techniques and procedures. He provided technical guidance to spectral reconnaissance programs at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center.
In addition, Mr. Bartell has published numerous technical journal articles and conference proceedings. A VIP member of Worldwide Who's Who, he will be featured in an upcoming issue of Pro-Files Magazine.
