2014 Chevrolet Spark Named an IIHS 2014 Top Safety Pick, Notes Ferman Chevy of Tampa
For its small size, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark has top-rated safety, according to IIHS tests.
TAMPA, FL, January 28, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It may be small, but the 2014 Chevrolet Spark has received high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. As a matter of fact, it's the only vehicle in the minicar class to earn a Top Safety Pick rating, and it can be found at Ferman Chevy of Tampa. (1)
The Spark was rated "good," the top IIHS score, in the overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, and "acceptable" in the small overlap test. (1) This last test is the newest addition to the IIHS battery, and it is designed to learn what happens to a car when its front corner strikes another object, be it a car or a lamp post. Tampa Chevy drivers are sure to benefit from this added safety measure.
For a car as compact (and fuel-efficient) as the Spark to hold its own on a highway full of larger vehicles, engineers had to design a lot of safety into a small package. Lightweight, high-strength steel makes up more than half of the materials in the Spark's underbody and nearly half of its upper body. (1) Safety during a side impact was paid special attention, with rigid door beams, H-shaped structure under the seats and high-strength cross members in place to improve protection and manage crush space. Since the car has a short wheelbase of 93.5 parkable inches (less than 8 feet), dispersing energy from a front impact was also important. (1) The design of the front end allows the structure of the car to absorb and distribute that energy around the occupants. (1) And for any energy that does make it into the cabin, a full complement of 10 airbags is standard in the Spark, now available at Chevy dealers in Tampa.
