Atlanta Traffic Attorney, Sam McRae, Discusses Georgia's DMV Point System

Georgia's license point system aims to keep bad and dangerous drivers off the road, explains Sam McRae Law.

ATLANTA, GA, February 26, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the state of Georgia, bad drivers are tracked through a system of license points, which are put on the driver's license when they violate driving laws and statutes. The Atlanta traffic ticket lawyers at Sam McRae Law believe that you should understand the way this point system works, especially since it can have a major effect on your ability to retain your license.

Georgia lawmakers believe that driving is a privilege, not a right, and that you should not be able to keep that privilege if you are a bad, dangerous or otherwise reckless driver. The point system is an easy way for the DDS to keep track of your poor driving habits over time and your license can be suspended, canceled or revoked if you accumulate a certain number of points over a certain period of time.

For most drivers, a license suspension will occur if you get 15 points on your license within a period of 24 months. Sam McRae Law's traffic lawyers in Atlanta, Ga., note that points can be gained for committing a variety of offenses, including reckless driving, speeding, improper passing, aggressive driving and much more. The number of points accrued depends on the offense and its severity, but it typically ranges from one to six points.

"If you are a safe driver who rarely gets tickets, you may not ever have to worry about the number of points on your license," says Sam McRae, Attorney at Sam McRae Law. "However, if you get multiple tickets in a year or commit a major violation of traffic law, you should check your driving record periodically to be aware of your point status."
