Writing Tips from Prompt Proofing - Think Twice, Write Once

Reports you write may remain on file for years.

The moral in this tale? Think very carefully before committing pen to paper, pressing 'send' on an email, publishing a blog post or submitting a press release. Once it's out there, it can't be recalled.

We all make errors: we make typos when we're in a rush or we mis-spell words and forget to check. Does this matter? Always! You may think that a quick memo to employees or a co-worker isn't that important - the odd error won't matter, right? Wrong! At best, you appear careless, at worst, not able to write competently in your own language - likely not the impression you want to make, even in relatively informal contexts.

In more formal writing, accuracy and professionalism become crucial. Errors not only affect your credibility, they can lead to confusion and misunderstandings.

Read through everything that you write and put out into the universe. Check for errors, check for clarity, check for tone. Is anything possibly offensive or in bad taste? Could anything be misconstrued? Is there anything that you would be embarrassed to read in ten years' time? Then re-read again - in case you missed something the first time! If your writing is intended for the public domain - use a proofreader; be remembered for the quality of your writing - not an unforgettable error.
