Next Generation HR Solution for Generation X Y Boomer Employees

Let's face it! The era of nervous candidates promoting their qualifications to an employer for a desired job has passed. Companies are in the unenviable position of selling themselves as the employer of choice to quality talents in short supply.

/24-7PressRelease/ - CALGARY, AB, CANADA, January 02, 2008 - Savvy employers are implementing modern HR strategies to create an edge in the battle for best talents. These strategies include flex benefits, flex time, and job sharing, to name a few. Other companies are subsidizing the cost of gym memberships, providing on-site daycare, and most recently, lifestyle management services (aka concierge services).

Lifestyle management services are practical services, provided by employers to their employees to balance their personal and work lives. Services include errands, pet care, home management, and elderly accompaniment services. Picture having your grocery shopping coordinated to be delivered upon your return home, a companion visiting your aging parent and assist in writing a letter, an associate waiting for the utility person to arrive at your home, or a dog walker taking Spot to the park, all while you are at work!

These services have gained in popularity in the U.K, the United States, and are slowly gaining recognition in Canada. A leading healthcare provider in Michigan implemented lifestyle management services to all its employees: "94 percent of employees say it helps them balance work and personal responsibilities...93 percent say it has increased their commitment to the hospital...Turnover rates have decreased by 54 percent since they started the service." (Bob Nelson, Nelson Motivation Inc.)

Research shows that at least in the area of work-life balance, Generations X, Y, and Baby Boomers share the same challenges. Using numbers from 2005, Statistics Canada reported in Spring of 2007 that "one-third of (31%) of Canadians aged 19-64 identified themselves as workaholics...65% worried that they do not spend enough time with family and friends".

It costs Canadian employers $billions annually on recruiting, turnover, and retraining. Many studies do not reflect the intangible costs to employers such as the loss of knowledge and disengaged employees. Companies need to become even more proactive in caring for their people.

Lack of time is a ubiquitous problem shared by most. It transcends generations. Lifestyle management services may prove to be the secret ingredient for employers looking to gain and maintain an edge in this labour market.
