ATLANTA, GA, April 08, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- If there is one thing that living in Atlanta during the summertime will teach you (other than that air conditioning is wonderful), it will teach you that electricity can be incredibly expensive. With spring right around the corner, residential electrical contractor Pat Murphy Electric wishes to offer you some tips on how to save on your electric bill.
Your first step in saving on your electric bill is to turn things off if you are not using them. Try to ensure that you turn the lights off whenever you leave a room and turn the TV off when you aren't watching it. Many people let their computers "sleep" at night, but you should power it down to save on electricity instead. The commercial electricians at Pat Murphy Electric note that you can set up your computer so that it will shut down after a certain period of inactivity.
If you can, install a programmable thermostat to keep your home from heating and cooling while you are not home. Even if you can't install a programmable thermostat, you can reduce your energy usage by raising the temperature by a degree or two in summer and reducing it the same amount in winter.
To ensure that the energy you use to heat and cool your home stays inside, the Atlanta electricians recommend sealing cracks around windows and floorboards, properly insulating your attic and using or blocking sunlight as needed for heat.
Another excellent idea is to upgrade the appliances in your home to Energy Star appliances. You may even be able to get a tax credit for investing in energy efficiency. Whether you can make the investment in new appliances or not, switching your light bulbs to more efficient models (CFLs or LEDs) is an inexpensive fix that will also save energy.
