A 15-Year-Old Filmmaker Convinces Her Mom to Take Her On a Six-Month Journey Around the World

    TORONTO, ON, April 30, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kasha, also known as The Sunrise Storyteller, is a 15-year-old teenage photographer/writer and aspiring documentary filmmaker, who pitched before a panel of seasoned film industry experts such as Gail Harvey, Mark Sanders, Adam Lopez and Stephanie McArthur in what Raindance Toronto calls the 'Dragon's Den for filmmakers", taking home 2nd prize. And, she wants you to know she's got the coolest mom on the planet.

Kasha has been on a social justice journey since she was 8 years old. So has her mother. Last year their passions and paths merged as they both attended the United Nations 57th Commission on the Status of Women with the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace. Together as mother and daughter, Marla & Kasha Slavner, came back to Toronto fully inspired by the many UN women delegates from around the world they met trying to make a difference for mothers and their children on the planet who may not be celebrating in the same way mother's in North America might be this coming holiday.

After entering a contest asking what she would do to change the world, Kasha was inspired to create The Global Sunrise Project and enlisted her mother in her cause. Her mom was motivated by the potential of what this project could mean to both her daughter and those she could possibly touch with her documentary and together they set out to make it happen.

For ten months, both single mom and daughter have been working side by side around the clock laying the tracks for this travel with purpose adventure.

Embarking on the Journey

"For six months, one semester out of school, this mother/daughter duo will travel the world for the purpose of discovering a connection to curriculum that reaches far beyond the classroom."

This coming May they will start their travels leaving Toronto and moving through, South Africa, Africa, South East Asia & Central/South America. Kasha, also known as the The Sunrise Storyteller , is creating a documentary film. She's in search of stories of resilience, inspiration and empowered leadership. She is also writing a short book of reflections about this journey. Her mom will be homeschooling & mentoring Kasha en route and will also be sharing her writing.

They've also recruited a little help to the project from other mother mentors & advisors such as National Geographic contributor Lola Akinmade Akerstrom, Kaizen Leadership Institute Julia Von Flotow, Social Media Specialist, Paula Coop McCrory, Community Impact Professional, Joanne Norris, who are lending their support to this remarkable young woman and UN Youth delegate and her mom Marla.

To raise funds for the project they've launched a crowdsource funding campaign on Indiegogo -igg.me/at/kashathesunrisestoryteller The campaign which runs until May 22nd, 2014 is already underway and has a mother's day perk to celebrate all that mothers do for us.
