"We feel that these stories hold a mirror to society, and through seeing oneself reflected, can have a positive influence and impact on people and culture."
LOS ANGELES, CA, May 16, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On Monday, May 19th, 2014, the 2008 GLAAD Media Award-winning cable TV anthology series, The DL Chronicles, now The DL Chronicles RETURNS, formerly of here! TV and OUTtv Canada, will find a new and independent home on the streaming network, Vimeo On Demand.
The DL Chronicles tell the stories of closeted African-American men and their unique and individual journeys toward self-acceptance and acceptance within their communities.
The first new film in the upcoming anthology, Thomas, is about a NYC firefighter who has lost the will to live after a life-changing event and finds the inspiration to love when an intriguing character suddenly comes into his life.
The new release of the series is especially timely and relevant on the heels of the public disclosure of NFL's, Michael Sam, NCAA's, Derek Gordon, and other notables such as NBA's, Jason Collins, and Grammy Award-winning singer, Frank Ocean, who have broken historic barriers for African-American LGBT visibility in the media. Nonetheless, African-Americans still remain much further behind in the process of LGBT visibility than does their Caucasian counterparts plagued by fear, homophobia and stigma.
"We feel that these stories hold a mirror to society, and through seeing oneself reflected, can have a positive influence and impact on people and culture," says co-creator Deondray Gossett.
The popular cult series finds its second life online after years of studio stalling and winning back its broadcast rights. After two years of independent crowdsource funding, the former cable television series has reinvented itself as a film anthology and will be distributing directly through the internet. While high profile shows such as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards and A-list talent have been squeezing out the independent artists from streaming networks such as Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, Vimeo has remained Indie friendly.
"Vimeo is one of the few companies that provide monetized streaming services accessible to independent films and artists on a recognizable platform with a fair commission through its new PRO services. It allows us to profit enough to pay it forward into the next film in the series - based on the amount of viewers we garner," says, co-creator Quincy LeNear.
Through Vimeo, The DL Chronicles RETURNS will also be accessible on a variety of mobile platforms such as iPad, iPhone, Windows, and Android devices, and on streaming devices such as Apple TV, Xbox Live, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Google TV, and more.
"This is a passion project. We hope the series can sustain itself for as long as the fans support it. We aren't held to ratings and networks any longer but the success of the show is solely beholden to its viewers' desire to support it financially," says LeNear. "It's an experiment that ultimately lies in the hands of the public. Our fingers are crossed!"
