AUBURN, AL, May 21, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- National CPR and AED Awareness Week is June 1st through the 7th, and local business, CPR South, is providing the public with an opportunity to receive this life-saving training at no charge.
The free, non-certified, classes will be offered Tuesday, June 3rd and Thursday, June 5th from 6pm to 8pm, and will be located at the Auburn Chamber of Commerce on Glenn Avenue.
Those who attend will learn adult, child and infant CPR, how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and how to relieve a choking victim. The class will consist of discussion and hands-on practice. Those interested in receiving the training are encouraged to reserve their seat by visiting www.cpr-south.com or by calling CPR South at (877) 242-2527.
CPR South reminds people that sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time. Sudden cardiac arrest may occur when electrical impulses in the heart become rapid or chaotic, which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating effectively. Many victims appear healthy with no known risk factors.
"When a skilled bystander provides effective CPR to a cardiac arrest victim, they can double or triple that person's chance of survival. In addition, when an AED is used, those chances are increased even more," says Randy Boone, CEO of CPR South and Paramedic with the City of Opelika. "In essence, the best response for a cardiac arrest victim is to have willing bystanders that are trained and equipped," says Boone.
Every year in the U.S., more than 300,000 Americans experience Sudden Cardiac Arrest, according to the American Heart Association. About 95-percent of cardiac arrest victims die before arriving at the hospital, which demonstrates the need for trained and willing bystanders.
Since 2007, CPR South has been a local provider of CPR and safety training throughout the southeast. They offer courses from the American Heart Association as well as the American Safety and Health Institute. The goal of CPR South is to increase the awareness and ability of bystanders in the home and workplace with regularly scheduled open-enrollment classes and on-site classes for groups and businesses.
