Our heroine is Laura, a pedantic editor who travels to Nigeria in an effort to discover what really caused her father to drive his car over a cliff on an icy road near Calgary.

'419' refers to the criminal code for fraud in Nigeria; it is the term used for any fraudulent activity but, particularly, for the sending of scam 'phishing' emails aimed at parting unwitting recipients from their money. Anyone with an email account has likely received at least one of these emails but probably few of us are aware of the magnitude of the enterprise behind their proliferation.

As the novel travels (with our heroine) to Nigeria, we see the brutality that exists in the email scamming business; we also meet Amina, a young, pregnant woman desperately attempting to escape from the strict Sharia law of the sub-Sahara. Amina is rescued by Nnamdi, an amicable rascal who captures the reader's heart, but all does not go according to plan.

Meanwhile, Laura cleverly manipulates a very dangerous situation; however, yet again, not everything works out as planned.

The novel is confusing at times, as it makes frequent switches in both location and time, but it paints a fascinating - and concerning - picture of life in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. The ending will likely also come as a surprise to most readers.
