Summer Sizzling Show...Pippin Contemporary Presents Sandra Duran Wilson, Stephanie Paige and Suzanne Wallace Mears

    SANTA FE, NM, May 27, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Three artists with a mutual respect and admiration for each other's work are opening a group show at Pippin Contemporary from June 11 to July 1. Works by Suzanne Wallace Mears, Stephanie Paige and Sandra Duran Wilson will be represented with an opening reception on June 20, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 200 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501.

"These are three of the most exciting artists working today and I am delighted to feature them in this group show," gallery owner-artist Aleta Pippin says.

Suzanne Wallace Mears works primarily in kiln-formed glass and painting. "I've selected a composite group of kiln-formed glass pieces for the June show," she comments. "My choices include recent work and pieces that reflect the overall themes that drive my inspiration. These include vessels, bowls, abstract sculptural totems of a more serious nature, whimsical totems with personalities and--roosters, which have been a theme choice for years.

"Pippin Contemporary is a very colorful, joyous gallery featuring abstract work," Mears added. "I am a colorist and feel that my work is a great fit with the direction of the gallery. My selections are based on the focus of the gallery and my own direction of work. This show features work by three different artists and my hope is that the work will 'marry' well with my two other artists in this show."

Stephanie Paige creates beautiful textured pieces of art that are made layer by layer of hand-made plasters. "I am so grateful to be a part of this show with two amazing artists!" she says. "My uniquely hand-mixed-media works are created with textured layers of hard colored marble dust plasters that are sanded down into the under layers exposing the different colors and textures," Paige explains."I then burnish the surface using lots of pressure with metal trowels and finish the surface by polishing the plaster. This process gives the piece varying sheens and textures.

"As I prepared for this show, I have dedicated my work to Mother Nature's Santa Ana Winds," she added. "With my process, the dry hot winds gave me the ability to create works that have many layers and high-burnished and polished surfaces mimicking the winds. You will always find the Earth's elements in my work because I feel a need to stay in the moment and have over whelming gratitude for all things and all beings. Santa Fe's high desert, beautiful mountains, warm solar heat and flowing winds will be seen in my new works."

Sandra Duran Wilson is a third-generation artist with roots in Mexico, Spain and Italy. She comes from a family of artists and scientists and she combines her background in both fields to express her style of painting abstract stories. She will use imagery from scanning electron microscopes along with textured surfaces from paints she has made.

"My medium is acrylic paint," she says. "I paint with this because I am able to blend it with an almost endless array of other media. Mixed media is my passion because I can incorporate collage, printmaking, textures and transfers, all into the same painting. My latest book, "Alternative Art Surfaces," (with Darlene Olivia McElroy, 2014, North Light Shop) also plays an important role in the creation of art for my exhibition. I spent a year researching how to paint on a wide variety of surfaces and as a result I am working on various wood and cast-acrylic surfaces. My focus on this body of work is how the paint moves over the surface. I have called my part of this show, "Flow--Through Thick and Thin" because I am using viscosity along with surfaces to create both applied and implied textures. As always for me, the color is influenced and seen by sounds such as music, spoken word and natural sounds from the environment.

"I am also working on a long-range project that is focused on water, sound and movement. These works are the first in this evolving series," Duran Wilson adds.

Duran Wilson received her BFA and her BS from the University of New Mexico. She has lived and worked in Santa Fe for more than 30 years. Her work is continually evolving and growing as she explores the edge of materials science.
