BURWOOD, AUSTRALIA, May 30, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Marita McCabe, Professor of Psychology, Deakin University, Professor of Psychology of Deakin University has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in education.
Dr. McCabe has 35 years of professional experience, with 22 years as a professor of psychology at Deakin University. Over the years, she has established herself as an expert in body image, as well as obesity prevention and treatment, and the treatment of eating disorders, human sexuality, depression and dementia. On a daily basis, she is responsible for directing the Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing Research, as well as conducting research on the contribution of psychological factors to sexual dysfunction in men and women, and the development and evaluation of intervention programs to treat these sexual dysfunctions from a psychological perspective.
Dr. McCabe also conducts extensive research into body image, particularly among males, as well as the evaluation of treatment programs to address psychological problems among older people and those in palliative care. Additionally, she coordinates the thesis program for the Doctor of Psychology program, which graduates 20 research doctorates each year, while also acting as chief investigator for six large research grants.
Dr. McCabe was the Australian editor of "Sexual and Relationship Therapy" for six years. She currently serves as an associate editor for "Body Image and the Journal of Sexual Medicine," and is on the editorial board for the "Journal of Sex Research" and the "International Journal of Psychology." She has published more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, and published two books.
Looking back, Dr. McCabe attributes her success to her passion and to being involved with work and research that makes a difference. She became involved in her profession after developing an interest in psychology due to enquiries made by teenage girls about psychological issues while she was teaching science and mathematics at a high school. She wanted to understand psychological problems, what caused them and how to prevent them. The highlight of her career has been the many awards and acknowledgements she has received for her research and teaching.
Dr. McCabe received a Ph.D. in psychology at Macquarie University. She was recently inducted into Worldwide Branding and also maintains affiliation with The Australian Psychological Society Limited, the Psychologist Registration Board, the International Association of Eating Disorders, the International Academy of Sex Research and ISSM. In years to come, Dr. McCabe looks to continue to focus her career on research and mentoring her students.
